Overview

The all-new Audi A5 coupe debuted at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show alongside the high-performance S5 version, which was shown for the first time at the auto show in New York. The S5 was finished in bright Misano Red paint for the New York show which highlights the beautifully sculpted design. The A5 and S5 join the redesigned Audi TT coupe and the Audi R8 supercar as Audi offers a complete line of performance coupes.

An all-new four-seat coupe, the A5 incorporates many elements from the Nuvolari concept of 2003 for a combination of elegance and sportiness that Walter de’Silva, head of Volkswagen Group Design describes as “the most beautiful car I have ever designed.”

Design elements from the Nuvolari concept include Audi’s trademark trapezoidal grille framed by rectangular headlights, very thick C-pillar, frameless windows, and a waistline that flows upwards around the wheel arches to give the car a dynamic, sporty character.

In Europe, the A5 will be offered with engines that range from a 1.8-liter four cylinder to a 3.2-liter V6, as well as 2.7-liter and 3.0-liter diesels. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard with Audi’s multitronic automatic as an option. Audi has not announced engine details for the U.S., but the 3.2-liter V6 currently offered in the A6 would be a good bet.

Audi interiors have been widely praised for their design and elegance. While the interior of the A5 is practical for a coupe, it continues to build on Audi’s reputation as the benchmark in interior design. With a focus on ergonomic design and functionality combined with high-quality materials and excellent build quality, the A5 interior is focused on the driver, the instruments and the center console forms one unit.

Another example is the door panels where the controls, metal trim, leather trim, armrests and storage compartment all form a single unit. The instrument panel includes familiar Audi styling elements for the speedometer and tachometer but the details are a new design. The Audi Multimedia Interface screen is positioned high on the center stack to make it easy to read.

Technology includes partial LED lighting, an electromechanical parking brake, an all-plastic key and three-zone climate control.

This sporty concept is exactly what we've been waiting for from Mitsubishi: that is, Lancer Evolution performance and technology in an angularly (or is it angrily?) styled coupe. The Concept-RA "shows that thrilling performance and environmental responsibility need not be mutually exclusive concepts," according to Mitsubishi.
The Concept-RA blends a "next-generation" version of the Lancer Evolution X's Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) vehicle dynamics driveline — which includes Active Center Differential, Active Yaw Control and Active Stability Control — with Active Steering and Active Damping Control for the suspension. The Concept-RA also has the Lancer Evolution X's terrific new Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission, which allows either manual shifting via paddles or the use of a full automatic mode.

The car's environmental-ness comes from its new low-emissions 2.2-liter 16-valve turbodiesel 4-cylinder. This engine features direct injection and MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve lift and timing Electronic Control) variable valve timing as well as a Variable Diffuser/Variable Geometry turbocharger, which help to achieve 204 bhp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque.

“Furai,” simply translated, means "sound of the wind" and is the fifth iteration or evolution of Mazda's new design language exemplified in its initial Nagare concept, which you may recall meant “flow.” Far from just a piece of artwork on wheels, this working concept actually began life as one of Mazda's 2006 season ALMS P2 race cars.

Built on a Courage C65 chassis and powered by a 450-bhp 3-rotor rotary engine, this ethanol (E100)-powered concept car is an exercise in reverse homologation: It represents an ideal within the Mazda philosophy, and that is to bridge the gap between single-purpose race cars (ALMS) and street-legal models (Ferrari Enzo, Lotus Elise), according to Mazda's Director of Design, Franz von Holzhausen.

The complex outer shell of the Furai clearly follows its predecessor's design trends, but through the guidance and expertise of Swift Engineering also functions aerodynamically. Front-fascia channels direct air to the brake ducts as strategically placed louvers on top of the front wheel fenders aid heat evacuation and help suck the front end closer to the ground. Its sculpted flanks create turbulence which draws air to the side ducts that help keep the engine cool in conjunction with the radiators mounted in the car's sidepods. Aft of the gullwing doors, flow-directing details continue to guide air over the car's rear haunches toward a large, functioning, adjustable-element spoiler. The sharp element you see protruding from the roof is called an Air Fang, and was designed by the guys at Swift to optimize ram air induction. The air split by the Air Fang creates vortices which force air down into the intake.

1. Ford Mustang

When the latest Mustang debuted in 2005, its flashback styling tapped into a deep well of American automotive lust. Its retro design—plainly displayed via round headlights, triangular windows, three-element taillights, and galloping-pony grille—only added appeal to one of the last affordable American sports cars. Three years later, enthusiasts are still loving the Mustang's power, styling and affordability.

2. Chevrolet Corvette

Long an American icon, the current Corvette is also a world class, high-performance sports car. For the 2008 model year, a new LS3 6.2-liter V8 gives the Corvette an extra 30 horsepower and 24 lb-ft of torque. With the new mill cranking out 430 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque, you might assume a car with so much power would provide dismal fuel economy. You can't expect the gas mileage of a Toyota Corolla, but the Corvette's every-day supercar status grows when you learn the EPA estimates for an '08 manual-tranny version are an impressive 16 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

3. Lamborghini Murcielago LP640

Whenever a machine as exotic as the Murcielago hits the road, it can't help but turn heads. The latest iteration of this exotic sports car—the 2007 LP640—only adds to the neck-snapping appeal. The restyled body features new bumpers front and back, larger air intakes, and rear lights designed with a single piece lens. Derived from the Italian for the engine's mounting position—longitudinale posteriore—the LP640 is powered by a 640-horsepower 6.5-liter V12. The V12's torque peak of 486 lb-ft (at 6000 rpm) is channeled through a new 6-speed transmission, stronger rear differential and permanent all-wheel drive.

4. Mitsubishi Eclipse

Perhaps hoping to get back in with the tuner crowd, Mitsubishi went back to the drawing board for the Eclipse, which was all-new in 2006. With styling reminiscent of the machinery in the film "The Fast and the Furious," the latest Eclipse provides voluptuous lines in a sleek and well-contented front-wheel-drive coupe. There is no turbo for the base 2.4-liter 162-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, but plenty of power is on tap for the boulevard in the Eclipse GT, which sports a 263-horsepower 3.8-liter V6.

5. Ford Shely GT500

The most muscular of Mustangs, the GT500 is motivated by a supercharged 500-horsepower V8, which shares components with the discontinued Ford GT. It is easily the lowest cost 500-horsepower car on the road today, with an MSRP just shy of $42,000. That kind of power will get you from 0 to 60 mph in 4.91 seconds, 0 to 100 mph in 10.3 seconds and delivers a quarter-mile time of 12.99 seconds at 117.70 mph. A member of the 500-horsepower club, the GT500 can be had as a coupe or a convertible.

6. Nissan 350Z

Since its introduction in 2003, the 350Z has been a hit with consumers. Available in coupe or a convertible, the Z is powered by a 3.5-liter 306-horsepower V6 that delivers 268 lb-ft of torque. For 2007 Nissan gave the 350Z the next-generation VQ35HR engine with a twin air intake system to reduce airflow resistance. Added for 2007 is the NISMO 350Z, which features a more aerodynamic look, a specially tuned suspension, Brembo brakes and lightweight forged-alloy wheels. NISMO is Nissan's performance products division.

7. Saturn Sky

Saturn may have been waiting a long time to hear this word, but the Sky is a sexy car. Often compared to its sibling, the Pontiac Solstice, the Sky's suspension is tuned differently to provide a more compliant ride. The base engine is a 2.4-liter 177-horsepower 4-cylinder, while the Sky Red Line's mill is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder producing 260-horsepower. Starting price for a 2008 Sky is just under $25,000.

8. Porsche 911

The iconic rear-engine sports car, the 911 has managed to retain its trademark silhouette since its inception over 40 years ago. Curb weights have climbed with content over the years (currently 3,495 - 3,572 pounds), but so has engine output. The range-topping 911 Turbo cranks out 480 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-Six. With a nearly prescient all-wheel-drive system, the Turbo can lunge to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and hit 100 mph in 8.4 seconds using the standard 6-speed manual transmission. Opt for the 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and acceleration times improve to 3.4 and 7.8 seconds.

9. Mazda MX-5 Miata

Introduced in the summer of 1989 as a 1990 model, the MX-5's quick steering, go-kart-like handling and sporty styling have helped the Miata land a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling two-seater sports car in the world. Following the trend of retractable hardtop convertibles such as the Volkswagen Eos and Pontiac G6, Mazda has added one to the MX-5 lineup. The retractable top adds only 75 pounds without reducing cargo room. Prices start under $21,000 for a 2008 Miata.

10. Lamborghini Gallardo

Another thrill machine from Lamborghini, the Gallardo is a two-seat mid-engine sports car equipped with a 520-horsepower 5.0-liter V10. For 2007, a lighter and more powerful Superleggera version has been added to the lineup. The Superleggera boasts extensive use of carbon fiber, bringing the sports car's weight to just under 3,000 pounds—making it more responsive and better suited for the track. With 522 horsepower on tap, the Superleggera boasts a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds, and a 195 mph top speed.

Entry-level sports sedans are a hot item and BMW seems to have mastered the formula. After getting a major overhaul for 2006, a sporty coupe joins the lineup for 2007. Beyond the re-skin, the new twin-turbocharged, 300-horsepower 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine, and new xDrive all-wheel-drive system are now available in all 3-Series coupes and sedans. The beautifully sculpted twin-turbo 335i Coupe will leap to 60 mph in only 5.13 seconds, and eclipse the quarter-mile in just 13.70 seconds.
2. BMW 5-Series
The 5-Series is available in a sedan or a wagon and has been updated for the 2008 model year. Ride and handling have always been exceptionally strong attributes for this luxury player, and this version is no different. On the surface the 5-Series gets a refreshed look, and beneath the skin, engine choices are a 230-horsepower 3.0-liter Six (528) or the new 3.0-liter twin-turbo Six in the 535. A number of new features have been added, including a lane departure warning system and active cruise control with a "Stop & Go" feature.The 2008 5-Series starts at just under $45,000 for the sedan and $54,000 for the sports wagon.
3. Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Getting a makeover for the 2008 model year is the redesigned, fourth-generation C-Class. A standout styling cue is the new grille and larger Mercedes emblem-a more mature look for a machine nearly 4 inches longer and 2 inches wider. Engines are carryovers, but a new all-wheel-drive system will be available with an automatic transmission in the C300 Sport and C300 Luxury trims. The revised steering and suspension is tuned to make the C-Class more agile, in hopes of competing with the class-leading 3-Series. Prices for a 2008 C-Class starts at just over $31,000.
4. Cadillac CTS
Cadillac's aging image began to change with the CTS debut in 2003, allowing it to woo many potential BMW 3-Series owners. Though conquest sales are always nice, it's the younger age demographic that really matters to Cadillac. The brand's transformation continues for 2008, with the CTS's first major redesign. The new entry-level Caddy includes more room, power and performance. Partly developed on Germany's famous Nurburgring race track, the CTS is offered with three suspension setups and all-wheel-drive is a $1,900 option.
5. Acura TL
Acura has brought new meaning to the term well-equipped, and the TL is no different. Based on the Honda Accord, the front-wheel-drive sedan provides a luxurious cockpit loaded with comfort and convenience features as standard. Rear-seat room is impressive, and the sharp handling TL provides plenty of snap from its 3.2-liter V6. Enthusiasts may want to opt for the Type S, which has a more powerful 286-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, a firmer suspension, a limited-slip differential and a more aggressive look.
6. Lexus ES 350
Also known as the luxury version of the popular Toyota Camry, the ES 350 was redone for 2007 with a longer wheelbase, more power and a new transmission. To differentiate between the two, Toyota has made the new ES even more of a pure luxury model. Ride comfort and handling have been improved, the new 272-horsepower V6 provides plenty of refined thrust, airbags can be found all over and there's a new optional panorama roof. For added safety and luxury, an optional new pre-collision system can be had along with a Premium Plus package. Expect this version to do even better than the Lexus ES 330.
7. Lexus IS
A major competitor to the BMW 3-Series, the IS is a major improvement over its predecessor, with silken lines and more powerful engines. Partly derived from the GSGS sedan, the IS is longer, wider, taller, and has a longer wheelbase than the previous edition. The top-of-the-line model is the rear-wheel-drive IS 350, which has a 306-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 that can hustle the car to 60 mph in only 5.6 seconds. For the more fuel-conscious, the 2.5-liter IS 250 offers respectable mileage at 20 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway.
8. Infiniti G35
The G35 has been a hit since its introduction with the sporty-looking coupe grabbing most of the attention. But that may change as Infiniti has given the sedan an update for the 2007. The re-do includes more power, sleeker styling and an improved interior. Available in rear- or all-wheel drive, the new G35 can be had in Base, Journey and Sport trims. Unlike the coupe, which for 2008 receives a larger 3.7-liter V-6 and has been retagged the G37, four tall adults can easily fit in the sedan. Prices start at just over $31,000 for the base G35 sedan.
9. Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Redesigned for the 2007 model year, the E-Class has a full array of safety features that include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction control, Electronic Stability Program, eight airbags and active head restraints. Its suspension design and technology arrive via the S-Class, and the Airmatic air suspension on the E550 and E63 AMG provides a smooth and self-leveling ride. To increase fuel efficiency, a clean diesel sedan costs just $1,000 more than the gas-powered version, with a mpg rating of 23 city and 32 highway.

10. Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Mercedes' flagship sedan is quiet, luxurious, agile, powerful and filled with a long list technological features. Engine options range from the least expensive S550 with a 382-horsepower 5.5-liter V8, to a 604-horsepower, twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter V12 in the S65 AMG. Owners may find the Park Assist and Infra-Red Night View Assist especially useful. The radar-based Park Assist can help the driver park by showing red, yellow and blue lines on a dashboard screen as a guide. For night-time driving, the Infra-Red Night View Assist can extend the driver's forward visibility nearly 500 feet.

Calling it no less than the reinvention of the Volkswagen, VW Chairman Martin Winterkorn introduced the up! Concept, a 4-passenger rear-engine hatchback with a flexible architecture that may be used for an entirely new family of vehicles.

This small city car is unmistakably a Volkswagen, with a basic shape and styling cues similar to those found in the larger Rabbit/Golf hatchbacks. The difference is that this vehicle has much shorter overhangs thanks to the positioning of the powerplant, which could be a conventional 2- or 3-cylinder engine or even a hybrid/fuel-cell unit, over the rear axle.

Even though the up! measures just 135.8 in. long and 64.2 in. wide, the cabin has a spacious feel thanks to thin-backed bucket seats that in all positions, except the driver’s, can be folded forward flat or removed all together. In addition, the seat cushions themselves are actually air mattresses that can be inflated or deflated to match the occupants comfort level.

Although the basic controls are simple, the center touch screen incorporates a proximity sensor similar to Apple’s iPhone, which allows for intuitive operation of complicated functions. While the up! is a concept, Winterkorn emphasized that VW is serious about building such an urban car and other variants as well, both for European and export market. In fact, one of the rumors circulating at the show was that development of the next-generation Beetle has been stopped to see if this new rear-engine platform can be adapted to that model.

Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1929 as Scuderia Ferrari, the company sponsored drivers and manufactured race cars before moving into production of street legal vehicles in 1947 as Ferrari S.p.A.. Ferrari's cars are among the most desirable of vehicles to own and drive, and are one of the ultimate status symbols of wealth in the world. Throughout its history, the company has been noted for its continued participation in racing, especially in Formula One, where it has largely enjoyed great success, especially during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, late 1990s, and 2000s.

Finally, after years of financial struggles, Enzo Ferrari sold the company's sports car division to the Fiat group in 1969 in order to help ensure continued financial backing for the foreseeable future. Enzo Ferrari himself retained control of the racing division until his death in 1988 at the age of 90.

Ferrari also has an internally managed merchandising line that licenses a wide range of products bearing the Ferrari brand, including eyewear, pens, pencils, perfume, clothing, high-tech bicycles, cell phones, and even laptop computers. Financial Times named Ferrari number one on its 2007 list of the 100 Best Workplaces in Europe.

History of Ferrari

1929–1946
Enzo Ferrari never intended to produce road cars when he formed Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 as a sponsor for amateur drivers headquartered in Modena. Ferrari prepared and successfully raced various drivers in Alfa Romeo cars until 1938, when he was officially hired by Alfa as head of their racing department.

In 1940, Alfa Romeo was absorbed by the Fascist government of Benito Mussolini as part of the Axis Powers' war effort. Enzo Ferrari's division was small enough to be unaffected by this. Because he was prohibited by contract from racing for four years, the Scuderia briefly became Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari, which ostensibly produced machine tools and aircraft accessories. Also known as SEFAC (Scuderia Enzo Ferrari Auto Corse), Ferrari did in fact produce one race car, the Tipo 815, in the non-competition period; it was thus the first actual Ferrari car (it debuted at the 1940 Mille Miglia), but due to World War II it saw little competition. In 1943 the Ferrari factory moved to Maranello, where it has remained ever since. The factory was bombed by the Allies in 1944 and rebuilt in 1946, with the war ended and the Mussolini government overthrown, to include a works for road car production. Right up to Il Commendatore's death, this would remain little more than a source of funding for his first love, racing.

"Scuderia Ferrari" literally means "Ferrari Stable"; the name is figuratively translated as "Team Ferrari".

1947–present

The first Ferrari road car was the 1947 125 S, powered by a 1.5 L V12 engine; Enzo reluctantly built and sold his automobiles to fund the Scuderia. While his beautiful and fast cars quickly gained a reputation for excellence, Enzo maintained a famous distaste for his customers, most of whom he felt were buying his cars for the prestige and not the performance. Ferrari road cars, noted for magnificent styling by design houses like Pininfarina, have long been one of the ultimate accessories for the rich. Other design houses that have done work for Ferrari over the years include Scaglietti, Bertone, Touring, Ghia, and Vignale.

In 2005, four universities were granted the opportunity to design the next vehicle line-up for Ferrari in a student competition named 'Ferrari Concepts of the Myth'. Twenty winners were allowed to show off their concepts in a ¼ scale model and present their work to the board at Ferrari to allow for three out right winners to have the chance to work in the Ferrari design studio at Maranello.

As of 2007, the Fiat Group owns 85% of Ferrari, Mubadala 5%, and Enzo's son Piero 10%. Fiat has shelved plans for an IPO because Fiat Auto has now returned to profitability, thus removing pressure from the group.

The GT option

The more garishly liveried sporting model will doubtless grab the headlines, but the two new Mégane GTs - one petrol, one diesel - will be the volume sellers.

Available as three- or five-door hatches and embellished with some of the sportier aerodynamic cues (extended chin, side and roof spoilers) but smaller wheels, these are intended to bridge the gap between the RS models and the rest of the range.

Renault does say that some of the chassis tinkering from the TR26 has also been applied to the GTs, but if this usually translates as stiffer suspension settings all round, both petrol and diesel models still feel delightfully fluid on the road. Each is powered by a two-litre engine and both feature a turbocharger - the norm for diesels but less common in petrol engines. In this case, the turbo is not an attempt to lift the ultimate power (165bhp is comparatively modest for a two-litre these days) but instead puts back some of the low-down punch that emissions compliance has removed.

The Volvo C30 is a small family car produced by the Volvo division of Ford's Premier Automotive Group. The C30 is a three-door, four-seat hatchback powered by I4 and I5 engines. Despite the name, the car is the hatchback / coupe version of the S40/V50/C70 luxury vehicle range and therefore uses the same Ford C1 platform as its siblings.
